ONTARIO Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit Many dealers may not be aware that in the last budget proposal the provincial government set out a plan to strengthen the apprenticeship system. The McGuinty Government proposed three new programs, one of which is developing an Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit. "Corporations and unincorporated businesses would be eligible for a 25% refundable tax credit on wages and salaries paid after May 18, 2004, to eligible apprentices during the first 36 months of the apprenticeship. The maximum tax credit per apprentice would be $5000 per year over the first 36 months of apprenticeship". For the complete tax bulletin on the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit, a list of qualifying apprenticeships as identified by their apprenticeship trade codes, and more information on how to claim the tax credit on your corporate taxes, click on the link below. We recommend that you consult with your tax accountant about this issue.
ONTARIO WSIB Are you aware that WSIB came out with guidelines some years back on how to divide payroll between rate groups based on employee job title or duties? A number of dealerships, who have never been audited by WSIB or even after being audited are not classifying specific employees properly. For example, did you know that the warranty clerk, customer relations, receptionist, and parts dept should be classified under the sales group rate? Many dealerships classify parts with service and pro-rate the receptionist and other specific clerical positions, a costly mistake! Before making any changes call for a complete and accurate listing of the WSIB detailed guidelines from your WSIB account manager....it could be worth your time!
